Chennai panchang — local sunrise, tithi and rahu kaal
Chennai panchang follows east-coast sunrise. Rahu kalam is widely checked in Tamil households before travel, registration, and new beginnings — always with the city’s own solar day.
- Coordinates
- 13.08° N, 80.27° E
- Typical sunrise
- about 5:45–6:30 AM IST
- Calendar note
- Tamil panchangam (including some solar-month emphasis and temple codes) can name months differently from North Indian lunar month names. Tithi still answers “which lunar day is it?”
Chennai is east of Bengaluru, so dawn arrives earlier than many Karnataka clocks. If you commute between the two cities, do not reuse one rahu kaal for both offices.
Tamil Nadu temple culture (Kapaleeswarar, Parthasarathy, and neighbourhood amman temples) often schedules around local sunrise and rahu kalam. Pongal is solar; many vratas remain lunar. A complete Chennai reading therefore includes both the daily panchang cards and the festival month.
Because day length near 13° N is relatively stable, Chennai rahu kaal does not swing as wildly by season as Delhi’s. Still, the weekday part changes every day — Monday’s window is not Tuesday’s.
Use Tithi.live in Tamil or English. Share the Chennai URL, not a cropped time without a city name.
Practical tips for Chennai
- Rahu kalam posters that print one table for “all Tamil Nadu” ignore longitude; prefer this city page.
- For Rameswaram or Madurai trips, open those intents separately when you have them; Chennai is not a statewide clock.
- Brahma muhurta before a Marina-side dawn walk should track today’s sunrise, not a fixed 4:00 AM rule.
