A respectful overview of pradosh — the thirteenth-tithi evening window — without turning it into fear or a shopping list.

What identifies Pradosh

Pradosh is a Shiva observance associated with Trayodashi and the evening period. Drik Panchang’s published rule selects the date using Trayodashi during Pradosh after sunset. This is why reading only the tithi at breakfast is not enough to decide the evening observance.

Worked example: compare the intervals

Suppose a local calendar gives an illustrative evening worship interval of 18:15–20:15 and Trayodashi ends at 19:10. Their overlap is 18:15–19:10. If Trayodashi instead begins at 19:00, the overlap is 19:00–20:15. The arithmetic shows why the tithi boundary matters. These invented times are not a ritual ruling or a schedule for a real date.

To use an actual listing, obtain the evening window and the tithi boundary for the same location and date. Do not derive the entire puja window from sunset alone unless you know the convention used by the calendar you follow.

Prepare a complete note

Write down the observance name, civil date, city, sunset, the published worship interval and the tithi start or end time. If the festival card has a date but lacks a local window, use it as a reminder to check the local calendar. It should not be read as a minute-by-minute appointment.

A temple may publish its own service schedule. Distinguish that attendance time from an almanac interval: a scheduled ceremony and a calculation describe different things. Confirm the temple’s actual opening and service times directly.

Avoid common mix-ups

Pradosh and Shivaratri have different calendar rules; do not transfer a night-time instruction from one to the other. A weekday name such as Som Pradosh adds a label, but it does not replace checking Trayodashi and the local evening.

Use the festival list to plan ahead, then revisit the selected city and date before the observance. If two calendars disagree, send both references with the exact fields to Contact. Differences should be investigated with their assumptions visible. This guide does not prescribe fasting intensity, food restrictions or a universal puja procedure; follow the practice appropriate to your household.

Frequently asked questions

Is pradosh the same as Shivaratri?

No. Pradosh is the trayodashi evening observance that occurs twice in most lunar months. Maha Shivaratri is a specific Krishna Chaturdashi night with its own vidhi.
