Identify the correct Chaturthi

Sankashti is associated with Krishna Chaturthi, the fourth tithi of the waning half of the lunar cycle. A Shukla Chaturthi entry is a different calendar entry. Read paksha and tithi together rather than relying on the word Chaturthi alone. Drik Panchang’s Sankashti calendar supplies location-dependent moonrise information alongside its dates.

Worked example: what a reminder needs

Imagine a reminder that says “Chaturthi, 21:10.” Before forwarding it, establish what 21:10 means. It could be a tithi ending, a moonrise, or a temple appointment. Those are not interchangeable. A useful reminder would identify the event explicitly, alongside the city and civil date. The time here is invented only to illustrate this ambiguity.

If a calendar displays a time after midnight, confirm which civil date it belongs to. Some almanacs extend their day notation beyond 24:00. Do not silently convert a late-night value to the previous evening or remove the next-day marker when sharing it.

Why moonrise must be local

A moonrise calculation refers to a location and horizon convention. It is not fixed at sunset and is not determined by a Moon illustration. The U.S. Naval Observatory notes that moonrise can occur at different times of day and may not occur within a particular civil date at a given place.

Buildings, hills and cloud can affect what you see. A published rise time and a visual sighting are different observations. For the religious practice to follow when sighting is obstructed, consult your household or temple tradition rather than treating this website as a universal authority.

Using the site without guessing missing data

Start with the festival month to identify the named observance, then open the city’s daily panchang. Check whether moonrise is actually supplied. If it is absent or marked as belonging to another city, obtain a local reference; do not substitute sunset or the time from a previous month.

Keep the source URL when saving a reminder. To report a discrepancy, include the selected location, date, paksha, tithi and the field you compared. This makes a correction actionable. This article explains calendar reading; it does not prescribe fasting restrictions or promise spiritual or health outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sankashti the same as Vinayaka Chaturthi / Ganesh Chaturthi?

No. Sankashti is typically the Krishna paksha chaturthi each month. Vinayaka / Ganesh Chaturthi usually refers to the Shukla Chaturthi festival (especially Bhadrapada) with public mandals.
