Yoga and Karana in Panchang: The Two Quiet Limbs

Yoga and karana complete the classical five limbs of panchang. This guide explains what they measure and when a householder should actually care.

The five limbs, not three

Popular apps shout tithi, nakshatra and rahu kaal because those three answer most household questions. Classically, panchanga means five limbs: tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga, and karana. Skipping the last two is fine for a school-day glance. It is incomplete if you are trying to understand why a pandit mentioned a “Vyatipata” or a “Bhadra” caution.

Tithi.live surfaces yoga and karana on the daily cards when the dataset includes them, next to tithi and nakshatra, so you can learn the full stack without a second textbook.

What panchang yoga measures

Yoga here is the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s longitudes, divided into 27 named segments (Vishkambha, Priti, Ayushman, and so on, through Vaidhriti). Some names sound pleasant; some are traditionally treated as challenging for certain starts. The names are mnemonic, not moral verdicts on your character.

Because both luminaries move, yoga changes on a different schedule from tithi. Two people can share a tithi and not share a yoga. That is why a complete card lists both.

  • Yoga is solar-plus-lunar, not a stretching class.
  • There are 27 yogas in common almanac lists.
  • A “difficult” yoga is a muhurta filter, not a day-off from kindness.

What karana measures

A karana is half a tithi. There are eleven named karanas; four are “fixed” and seven “repeating” in the usual teaching. Bhadra (Vishti) is the karana most often flagged in popular talk as a poor slot for auspicious beginnings.

If your family never mentions karana, you are not failing tradition. Many householders lived entire lives on tithi and vara alone. Literacy means you can decode the field when it appears — not that you must obey every medieval caution list.

How to read them on Tithi.live

Morning pass: tithi, nakshatra, rahu kaal, sunrise. Weekend pass: add yoga and karana and notice how they change. When a relative mentions Bhadra, you will already know which card to open.

For a wedding shortlist, take a screenshot of the full card (city + date labelled) to your purohit. Do not argue from a single field.

Humane use

Do not cancel a medical appointment because a yoga name sounded fierce. Do not shame a child because a karana is “inauspicious.” Almanacs refine optional timing. Character and care do the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Are yoga and karana the same as yoga the exercise?

No. Panchang yoga is an astronomical combination of Sun and Moon longitudes, split into 27 named yogas. It is unrelated to asana practice.

Do I need yoga and karana for daily rahu kaal checks?

Usually not. For ordinary days, tithi, sunrise and rahu kaal are enough. Yoga and karana matter more when someone is electing a careful muhurta.
